Now that you've stretched the borders of your mind, go back to the drawing buy wall art, and list all of your gifts and abilities, your professional achievements, your greatest successes. Then, instead of thinking of another job, consider using consulting as a bridge to a new reality.

Once you have a list of things you want in the office, start buying them. You can start small with staplers and pens, and then work up. Or you can start by decorating the office and making it your own. Remember you'll be spending quite a bit of time in it, so make it livable with family photos or posters you like. Try to settle on a theme that will enhance your work. For example if you are a freelance illustrator, find works of art that inspire you, or super chic and modern theme for house clean an office interior design consultant.

Building a custom home is exciting, and you will probably dive into it head first, stocking up on glossy Good Home magazines for inspiration. Keep in mind that you bought them as a source of inspiration, not as a catalog. The homes and rooms shown in those magazines may be beautiful, but that is because they are the best (read: most expensive) that the design world has to offer. Think of it as flipping through the pages of Vogue. Appreciate the aesthetic of the spreads, but don't consider them all realistic shopping choices.  
  
However, here's the amazing part. In a very short time, my #1 client became Lehman Capital, a division of Lehman Brothers, the company who has insisted I be laid off in 1983. Position your computer in such a way that you will not have to strain to reach the keyboard and where the monitor is not against the light. Make sure you are given enough space to freely move your home office chair whenever you need to change positions. You should be able to move around to easily access file cabinets, office equipments, and shelves.
