Call of Duty: Modern Warfare hasn’t been out for 24 hours in many places yet, but Infinity Ward is wasting no time. Patch 1.04 just went live on PC, Xbox One and PS4, and my PC is downloading the thing as we speak. The game did not launch without its share of technical problems: we had the server outages of the kind we’ve come to expect from massive launches like this one, but we also had some particularly nasty Xbox One crashes that Activision acknowledged and said it was working on.
We assume that patch 1.04 is primarily technical, designed to address some of the problems that people have been encountering since launch. Servers are stable now, with people apparently able to play matches with no trouble, but you’re going to find new and exciting bugs any time you let a game loose on millions of players at once. The team appears to be working quickly to address some things, though it can be an inconvenience for people that have to download a new update so soon after having downloaded the massive file for the full game.
I’m not seeing patch notes for 1.04 yet, though Infinity Ward might release them soon and I’ll post them here if I see them. Regardless, I’d expect Xbox One hard crashes to be top priority for the team, and the rest is likely the sort of technical tweaking that you might not notice or be aware of.
It’s also possible that this has something to do with Ground War, the large scale 32 vs. 32 mode that we played in the beta a little while ago. The in-game notification says that Ground War is meant to go live Friday night, so it’s always a possibility that the team is making some tweaks or adding some new files to prepare for that.
